After suffering from recurrent hip dislocation following two unsuccessful surgeries, the life of a 65-year-old man was marked by constant pain and dependency. However, thanks to an accurate reassessment of the underlying causes of surgical failure and the application of a more suitable treatment plan, doctors at the Department of Orthopedics & Traumatology – Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital successfully restored his mobility, ending a long period of suffering and immobility.
Successful Treatment Of Recurrent Hip Prosthesis Dislocation After Two Failed Surgeries
Mr. S.C. (65 years old, Cambodia) had undergone two hip replacement surgeries at a local facility, both of which ended in failure. He experienced repeated dislocations of his right hip prosthesis, with damage to the acetabular component and mild swelling of the surrounding soft tissue. These complications caused severe pain and significantly limited his ability to walk, perform daily activities, or care for himself — he relied entirely on his family for even the most basic tasks.
After researching treatment options, his family decided to take him to Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital. There, the Orthopedics & Traumatology team conducted a thorough clinical evaluation and diagnostic imaging. Upon identifying complex damage to the acetabular and prosthetic components of his right hip, a multidisciplinary consultation was held, and the team decided to proceed with a revision total hip replacement surgery.
Dr. Vo Van Man, Specialist Level II, Head of the Orthopedics & Traumatology Department and lead surgeon, shared:
“Total hip replacement remains the optimal solution for patients with advanced hip joint degeneration, deformities of the femoral head, or avascular necrosis. This procedure not only relieves pain but also helps patients avoid permanent disability and return to normal daily function”.
The surgical team, led by Dr. Vo Van Man, Specialist Level II and Dr. Vi Van Duong, Specialist Level I successfully performed the revision surgery. The new prosthetic joint was securely placed, and the patient’s mobility gradually improved.
Postoperatively, Mr. S.C. underwent supervised rehabilitation with physiotherapists. Remarkably, he was able to walk independently before discharge. He no longer experienced pain or swelling in the hip region. His rapid recovery is a testament to the surgical expertise and effective care provided by the Orthopedics & Traumatology team at Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital.
Why Hip Prosthesis Dislocation Happens?
Artificial hip dislocation is a known complication after joint replacement. Causes may include:
- Patient-related factors, such as failure to follow postoperative movement restrictions;
- Surgical technique issues, including improper alignment or fixation.
To minimize the risk of dislocation and ensure long-term prosthetic stability, patients must follow three key movement precautions:
- Avoid bending the hip beyond 90 degrees: Do not squat or sit on low surfaces. Use high chairs for activities such as eating or working.
- Do not cross your legs: Crossing legs while sitting or lying down can misalign the prosthesis and increase the risk of dislocation.
- Keep your legs straight: When lying on your back, keep both legs straight with toes pointing upward. Avoid inward or outward rotation of the feet or toes.
Additionally, Dr. Vi Van Duong, the patient’s postoperative physician, advised:
Patients should avoid strenuous activity, lifting heavy objects, or making sudden twisting movements. Squatting should be avoided. During early recovery, assistive devices like canes or walkers should be used to reduce stress on the hip joint. Regular physical therapy is also essential to strengthen muscles around the hip, improve mobility, and prevent recurrence.
