Minimally invasive, less painful, with no risk of complications during or after surgery, rapid recovery time, and high aesthetic results — these are the outstanding advantages of endoscopic prostate tumor enucleation via the transurethral approach, now being performed at Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital.

ELIMINATING “URINARY RETENTION” WITH ENDOSCOPIC PROSTATE TUMOR REMOVAL: EFFECTIVE, SAFE, AND HIGHLY AESTHETIC

Having suffered from frequent and prolonged episodes of urinary retention, despite long-term medical treatment, Mr. P.T.C (72 years old, Gia Lai) continued to endure persistent pain and discomfort without improvement.

Seeking relief from his condition, Mr. C. visited the Urology Clinic at Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital. Through examination and diagnostic imaging, Dr. Le Van Hieu Nhan (Specialist Level II) — Urology and Andrology Specialist — discovered that although the patient’s prostate tumor was benign, it had grown excessively large, compressing and obstructing the urethra, which resulted in persistent urinary dysfunction.

“At his advanced age, combined with ongoing hypertension treatment, choosing a method that minimizes complications and shortens the treatment period — such as bipolar transurethral endoscopic prostate enucleation — is the most optimal option for Mr. C.,” shared Dr. Le Van Hieu Nhan, who directly examined the patient and performed the surgery.

With this surgical technique, surgeons can extend the resection time for large tumors without the need for open surgery and without the risk of recurrence. The bipolar electrode offers superior hemostasis and has a lower risk of complications such as bladder neck stenosis or urethral stricture compared to the monopolar electrode. The electrical current of the bipolar device is confined within the bladder, helping prevent skin burns or bladder perforation—complications sometimes associated with monopolar instruments.

During the procedure, normal saline is continuously used to irrigate the urethra. This technique is considered one of the most advanced methods for treating prostate tumors and has been implemented at Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital, delivering highly positive outcomes for patients.

Two days after surgery, the patient had the urinary catheter removed, resumed normal daily activities, and walked independently, experiencing rapid recovery. Because this is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure with no external incision, it provides excellent cosmetic results. It is particularly effective for elderly patients or those with a high risk of bleeding and multiple underlying conditions.

Surgery is indicated when benign prostatic tumors cause complications that affect health and quality of life—such as nocturia, frequent urination, difficulty urinating, or urinary retention—and when medical therapy is no longer effective.

Dr. Nhan also advised: Patients experiencing symptoms such as urinary retention, frequent urination, or blood in the urine should seek evaluation from a urology specialist at a hospital equipped with modern diagnostic technologies. This helps accurately determine the presence and severity of benign prostatic hyperplasia and ensures timely and appropriate treatment to avoid dangerous complications.

With the strong development of minimally invasive interventional techniques that provide high-quality treatment outcomes, Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital will continue to implement this advanced method more widely in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, helping patients access high-tech medical services, reduce treatment costs, and strengthen trust in domestic healthcare quality.

The hospital accepts both Health Insurance and Private Health Insurance.
