Why should you get a gastrointestinal endoscopy?
In Vietnam, stomach and esophageal cancers are among the five most common gastrointestinal cancers. Alarmingly, up to 70% of patients are only diagnosed when the disease has already progressed to a late stage — making treatment more challenging, costly, and less effective.
Routine gastrointestinal endoscopy is one of the most effective methods for detecting precancerous lesions early. When identified and treated in time, the success rate can reach up to 70% — comparable to rates in developed countries.
Don’t wait until symptoms appear. Early gastrointestinal endoscopic screening is considered a “golden choice” in cancer prevention — especially as these diseases are increasingly affecting younger populations in Vietnam in recent years.
When should you consider an Esophagus — Stomach endoscopy?
You should seriously consider an esophagus — stomach endoscopy if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- Persistent dull abdominal pain
- Acid reflux or nausea
- Black stools
- Unexplained weight loss
Even without obvious symptoms, proactive screening is strongly recommended if you belong to a high-risk group:
- Over 40 years old with a family history of gastrointestinal cancer
- Over 45 years old and have never undergone gastrointestinal screening
- History of polyps, gastric ulcers, or esophageal reflux
- Diagnosed with Helicobacter pylori infection
- Regular smoking or alcohol consumption
Painless esophagus — stomach endoscopy is a highly effective tool for the early detection of serious digestive conditions. Screening today means timely treatment — and a healthier tomorrow.
Who should get a painless gastrointestinal endoscopy?
Painless gastrointestinal endoscopy is especially recommended for the following individuals:
- Those who fear pain, have a strong gag reflex, or have had unpleasant endoscopy experiences in the past
- First-time patients who have never undergone in-depth screening but have risk factors such as smoking, alcohol use, or an unhealthy diet
- Adults aged 45 and above, or those with a family history of stomach cancer, who need regular preventative screening

Esophagus — Stomach Endoscopy
FAQs
1. Is a painless esophagus — stomach endoscopy truly painless?
The painless esophagus — stomach endoscopy method uses mild anesthesia, allowing the patient to sleep soundly throughout the procedure. As a result, there is no pain, nausea, or discomfort as experienced with traditional methods. Once the patient wakes up, the procedure is already completed smoothly, without fatigue or soreness.
At Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital, this procedure is carried out following a safe protocol, including a pre-anesthesia assessment to evaluate overall condition. It is an ideal solution for those who are afraid of pain, have a strong gag reflex, or require a thorough endoscopic examination to detect small and subtle lesions in the esophagus and stomach.
2. How long does it take to receive esophagus — stomach endoscopy results?
Endoscopy results are typically available on the same day after completing all examination and testing procedures. The exact timing may vary depending on the number of prescribed items and the patient’s actual health condition.
Each step is carefully performed to ensure accuracy and safety. It is recommended to set aside a full day for the check-up to ensure a more comfortable and proactive health screening experience.
3. How soon can you eat normally after an esophagus — stomach endoscopy?
After an esophagus — stomach endoscopy, patients are advised to wait 1 – 2 hours before resuming eating and drinking to allow the stomach time to recover. If feeling stable afterward, they can return to a normal diet. It is recommended to start with soft, cool, and easily digestible foods such as thin porridge, soup, or fresh milk.
Note: During the first 24 – 48 hours, avoid spicy or sour foods, alcohol, and carbonated drinks. Meals should be smaller and more frequent throughout the day.
If any procedure such as polyp removal is performed during the endoscopy, medical staff will provide specific instructions regarding diet, light physical activity, and symptoms to monitor. Carefully following the doctor’s guidance will help promote recovery and reduce the risk of complications after the procedure.
4. Can an esophagus — stomach endoscopy detect cancer or early-stage lesions?
An esophagus — stomach endoscopy is a direct imaging method that enables early detection of precancerous lesions and early-stage cancers in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Through clear endoscopic visuals, doctors can closely examine the mucosal lining to identify abnormalities such as inflammation, ulcers, polyps, excrescences, metaplasia, dysplasia, or Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection — the leading cause of stomach cancer if left untreated.
5. Can I undergo an esophagus — stomach endoscopy if I have underlying conditions (e.g., heart disease, diabetes)?
Patients with underlying conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure can still undergo esophagus — stomach endoscopy, as long as their overall health is carefully assessed in advance. At Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital, a pre-anesthesia evaluation is conducted to ensure the patient’s condition is stable and the procedure is safe.
In addition, the endoscopist will coordinate closely with the patient’s primary physician to develop an appropriate care plan and monitor the patient’s condition before, during, and after the procedure.
6. Is the esophagus — stomach endoscopy package covered by public health insurance?
