“For patients with herniated discs, when conservative treatments such as rest, pain medication, and physical therapy fail to provide relief, surgery is often considered the option that helps them escape persistent lower back pain. However, in younger patients whose herniated discs have not yet compressed the nerve roots or caused spinal canal stenosis, is there any method that can help reduce pain and improve quality of life without surgery?”
What is the solution for young patients with herniated discs who want to avoid surgery?
This was the question raised by Ms. P.T.N.L (36 years old) when she visited the Neurosurgery – Spine Department at Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital. She had lumbar disc herniation at L4–L5 and L5–S1 for two years, and despite conservative treatment, her symptoms did not improve. The pain even worsened, affecting her mobility.
Based on her condition, Dr. DO ANH VU, MMed, Specialist Level II and Dr. DUONG DUC ANH, MMed from the Neurosurgery & Spine Surgery Department selected a minimally invasive technique called “Percutaneous Nucleoplasty Using Radiofrequency Energy” to treat her. This is a local anesthesia procedure in which two electrodes are inserted into the spinal discs and connected to a radiofrequency generator.
Ms. P.T.N.L was discharged the same day, and her back pain significantly improved by the next morning.

With this method, patients can experience significant pain relief — and in many cases, complete elimination of symptoms — for an extended period without undergoing surgery, allowing them to quickly resume daily activities without relying heavily on pain medication.
Disc herniation is often thought to be an age-related condition, caused by the degeneration and dehydration of spinal discs. However, in recent years, the condition has become increasingly common among younger individuals aged 25 to 40, due to improper posture, poor body mechanics at work, long hours of sitting (8–10 hours per day), and sedentary lifestyles typical of office workers. The risk is even higher among women who frequently wear high heels, which accelerates spinal degeneration and increases the likelihood of disc herniation.
Dr. DO ANH VU, MMed, Specialist Level II shared:
“Thanks to advancements in science and technology, many treatment options are now available for disc herniation. Particularly in cases where the herniation has not yet affected the nervous system, patients can be treated with non-surgical methods.
We continuously seek to learn and update our skills both domestically and internationally to bring the most effective treatments to our patients. Therefore, anyone experiencing symptoms such as lower back pain, radiating leg pain, numbness of the limbs, or restricted mobility should consult a Neurosurgery specialist to receive an appropriate treatment plan.”
Patients can also feel more reassured about treatment costs since both Health Insurance and Private Health Insurance are accepted at Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital.
