Increasing Number of Elderly Patients Requiring Hip Replacement Surgery
Recently, the Orthopedics & Traumatology Department at Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital has successfully performed hip replacement surgeries for many elderly patients, helping them put an end to months — even years — of pain and difficulty walking.
Elderly patients always present significant challenges for surgeons and anesthesiologists because of their frail health and multiple underlying conditions, especially cardiovascular disease and hypertension. Without an appropriate and individualized treatment plan, the risk of life-threatening complications can occur at any time.

Mr. H.H.N (66 years old, An Giang), who had a total hip replacement three days ago at the Orthopedics & Traumatology Department of Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital, shared that he had endured hip pain for nearly two years. Recently, walking had become increasingly difficult, and the pain intensified, greatly affecting his daily activities. His family decided to bring him to the hospital for examination.
They also explained that because Mr. N. has multiple underlying health conditions, they were very worried and spent time researching carefully before choosing the hospital based on recommendations.
After admission, Mr. N. underwent diagnostic tests, which revealed that avascular necrosis of the femoral head was the cause of his mobility problems. According to Dr. HUYNH DANG THANH SON, Specialist Level II, Deputy Head of Orthopedics & Traumatology Department, early-stage femoral head necrosis is difficult to detect.
he condition only becomes noticeable when it progresses, causing sudden hip pain. Symptoms often appear in later stages, when patients develop a limping gait and the femoral head becomes severely damaged, reducing the range of motion and eventually leading to loss of hip joint function.

After evaluation, Mr. N. was indicated for total hip replacement surgery. In addition to his advanced age, he also suffered from multiple comorbidities such as hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, coronary artery stenosis, valvular insufficiency, and heart failure.
Recognizing the high risks associated with an elderly patient with numerous underlying conditions, the Orthopedic Trauma team decided to conduct a multidisciplinary consultation with internal medicine specialists and the anesthesiology team. The patient’s blood pressure was stabilized, and all necessary preoperative tests were completed to ensure optimal preparation for surgery.
Choosing Hip Replacement – A Safe Option for Elderly Patients
Hip replacement surgery is no longer considered a major challenge in modern medicine. However, in elderly patients with multiple underlying diseases, the procedure can still pose significant difficulties. Early surgical intervention is crucial, as it helps reduce pain, restore mobility, and prevent complications related to existing medical conditions.
After a 1 hour and 30 minute procedure, the Orthopedic Trauma team — including Dr. Huynh Dang Thanh Son (Specialist Level II) and Dr. Nguyen Van Huynh — in coordination with the Anesthesiology and Internal Medicine teams, successfully completed the surgery.

Postoperatively, Mr. N. received care and physical therapy according to the treatment plan at the Orthopedics & Traumatology Department, and his recovery progressed well. On the second day after surgery, he began walking with a walker. By the fifth day, he was able to walk more confidently with assistive devices and was discharged from the hospital.
Dr. Son added that after hip replacement surgery, patients should supplement their diet with calcium-rich foods, along with nutrient-dense options such as vitamins, green vegetables, and protein-rich foods to support faster recovery. Alcohol, tobacco, and stimulants should be strictly avoided.
Patients should also limit spicy foods. Importantly, if any unusual pain occurs, they should seek medical attention at reputable healthcare facilities equipped with modern diagnostic technologies to ensure early detection and timely treatment, preventing progression that could affect quality of life. Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and minimizing risk factors is essential.
